Apprenticeships boost

Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil has encouraged local bosses to ‘adopt an apprentice’ as part of a new scheme

The skills support package will reward employers with up to £2,000 to recruit redundant apprentices.

Mr McNeil was one of the MSPs who refused to back the Scottish Government’s budget until commitments were offered to support and boost apprenticeships and is delighted these measures are there to help those willing to work.

He said: “This is a win-win situation that will help workers and businesses through the economic downturn.

“The pressure on local businesses as a result of the credit crunch has seen many young people lose their apprenticeships, some just a few months short of getting their papers.

“I have met with a number of young apprentices locally who found themselves in that position and that was why I was so determined to have this as a priority in the budget.

“So I am pleased that this is starting to take shape and I am hopeful that employers in Inverclyde will take this opportunity to give a young person a chance to learn a trade.”

This was echoed by Graeme Ogilvy, director for ConstructionSkills Scotland. He said: “In the current economic climate, like many other sectors, it is a challenging time for the construction industry.

“Apprentices are the lifeblood of this industry and it is important that we invest in the continuing development and training of the next generation of workers.”
