Giving Time

The most precious gift you can give a child, the cliché goes, is time.  But, cliché or not, the lengths to which busy working parents go to make time for their children shows we recognise there’s some truth in it.

Spare a thought, though, for those kids who never have a parent there for them; who don’t have a mother or father worthy of the name; who are consistently let down, ignored or neglected.

Who has any time for them?

Well, there are those who’re ready to listen and think hard about these children’s best interests: the volunteer panel members of the children’s hearing system.

When young people are in danger or get into trouble, it’s the panel members’ job to decide how to sort them out.  This doesn’t take a list of qualifications as long as your arm, but it does demand experience, a good dose of common sense and the ability to handle the responsibility of making big decisions about a young person’s life.

While Inverclyde has many public-spirited individuals who are already panel members, new recruits are always welcome.  And, as the three panel members who make up a children’s hearing cannot all be male or female, they need more men to sign up.

So, if you have time for vulnerable young people and want to find out more, why not go along to the information evening in the Municipal Buildings at 6:30 tonight?  To reserve your place, call the Clerk to the Children’s Panel Advisory Committee on 712111.
