Dementia charter

October 9th, 2009

Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil has welcomed a new charter of rights for people with dementia.

The idea has been put forward by the Scottish Parliament’s cross party group on Alzheimer’s and is set to be adopted by the Scottish Government.

The charter seeks to empower people with dementia and ensure they and their carers have the same human rights as every other citizen.

This week, local MSP Duncan McNeil signed up to the campaign and believes it could bring major benefits to Scotland’s older population.

He is now encouraging local people to sign up to the charter to ensure it is enacted.

The MSP said: “Older people are becoming increasingly empowered to exercise their rights and demand the services they need but not everyone is in a position to do that.

“While dementia can affect decision-making, communication and even reason, that doesn’t mean their dignity should be compromised and I believe all elderly people should be treated with fairness and respect.

“That is why I have signed up to this charter and I hope other do so aswell.”
