MSP calls for more money for respite care

Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil is backing a campaign to win more support for Inverclyde’s army of unpaid carers.

The area is thought to have more than 8,000 carers who receive too little or sometimes no assistance for looking after a relative or loved one.

The National Carers’ Organisation estimate that Inverclyde’s unsung heroes are saving the NHS millions every year.

Mr McNeil believes more should be invested in respite care and training to ease the burden on the area’s carers.

The MSP visited the Carer’s Centre in Greenock to meet with carers and hear their experiences of looking after the communities most vulnerable people.

He said: “Research shows that carers are more prone to suffering health problems themselves because of the workload, stress and lack of breaks.

“We must invest in our carers to ensure they get access to the support they need, whether it be respite care, training or simply advice.

“Given our reliance on unpaid carers, it is only right that we offer them the support they deserve for carrying out this vital role in society.

“We simply can’t afford to do without them – full time residential care is six times more expensive than a short term respite package that allows a carer to take a well-earned break.

“Carers do what they do out of love and a sense of responsibility but it is time we recognised the important role they play in our communities.”
