Road fears

More than one crash every two months is occurring on a busy coastal road, according to police statistics.

The A770 Cloch Road has been the scene of two fatal crashes and 14 serious crashes over a 10 year period.

In total, there have been 66 accidents on the road since 1999.

Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil believes it is time for action to curb the accident rate on the Cloch Road and has written to Transport Scotland asking them to look into the figures.

He said: “The police figures show that the casualties were more likely to be younger people and common factors were driver error and loss of control of the vehicle.

“Local people will know this stretch of road is one that has to be used carefully, with its winding roads and blind corners.

“There has to come a point when you accept that the accident rate is far too high and we take steps to reduce this.

“Road police have already indicated that this is a priority and they would support any physical measures that would improve safety.

“As a consequence, I have written to the head of Transport Scotland, which as the national body responsible for the safety of our roads, to see how we can take this forward.”
