Play it Safe
Do you
remember “Play it Safe”, where Jimmy Savile told youngsters how to enjoy
their leisure time without falling from, getting stuck in, or being run over by,
everyday hazards?
If you’re
saying, “no”, or, “who’s Jimmy Savile?”, you might be young enough
to want to read on.
Now that the
school holidays are here, you’re naturally thinking about how to spend the
next six weeks having fun, playing with your pals and extracting money from your
parents.
Whatever you
get up to, it’ll certainly be better than spending your summer in plaster,
hospital or worse. Sadly, though,
that’s just what some young people find themselves doing, all because they
make one daft mistake.
If you
don’t want to be like them, simply follow a few easy rules.
For a start, choose where to play. Steer
clear of busy roads, building sites, empty buildings and railway lines.
Electricity is also dangerous, so don’t go near sub-stations or
overhead cables. And, if you want a
swim, go down to the Waterfront centre, not a reservoir or the river.
Also, I know
it’s annoying, but let your parents or whoever’s looking after you know
where you are and when you’ll be home. And,
if a stranger scares you, shout as loud as you can and tell an adult.
It might
sound like it, but I’m not saying you should lock yourself away in your
bedroom all summer. Just that, when
you’re out having fun, make sure it doesn’t end early by taking a moment to
think.
