Scot Free

Do you remember the B movies we used to see at the Odeon or the Regal on Saturdays, where the hero kills the top vampire, zombie, or whatever only to see another one appearing in its place?

Well, just when we thought we had slain the Liberals’ politically correct monster, the new SNP Justice Minister jumps out behind us and announces that all sorts of thugs, thieves and vandals can carry on without the threat of ever going to prison.

Believe it or not, they think that anyone who today would be jailed for under six months should be allowed to walk - releasing over 80% of the criminals who should be in prison into our community.

95% of the criminals imprisoned for handling offensive weapons, therefore, will instead be freed to roam the streets, as will those who are currently locked up for drunk driving, assault or breach of the peace.

The Minister used to shout about “freeing” Scotland.  I didn’t realise he only meant the criminals.

Putting us at risk like this is, of course, also a bid to empty the jails and save money.  Exactly how these savings will be spent is not yet clear - but sending Two Hammers Harry off on an holistic anger management workshop won’t come cheap.

I thought daft notions about the criminals being the real victims and making excuses for criminality had finally been laid to rest.  But no.  Just as we see off one threat, we have another fight on our hands.
