Gone Fishing
It might not
have been ideal weather for sunbathing or golfing, but at least this
disappointing summer has offered plenty of good weather for fishing.
Angling is a
sport which stays with you for life; you can start at 8 and continue until
you’re 80. And, when every day
seems to bring another report bemoaning a lack of role models for young people,
particularly boys, it offers different generations the chance to mix with and
learn from each other.
It also gives
people who might otherwise spend their time in the town or city the chance to
get out into the fresh air of the great outdoors.
So I was
interested when an email landed in my inbox from the Scottish National Angling
Programme (SNAP), an organisation which aims to help more people, young and old,
get into the sport.
The coach
education structure is being reformed, there will be support for club
development and there’s a drive on to recruit a raft of new volunteer leaders
who will encourage people to pick up a rod.
A new basic qualification will give these leaders a grounding in how to
introduce young people to the sport in a safe, fun and environmentally
responsible manner.
I am, of
course, keen to promote these opportunities locally and if you or your club want
more information, I’d be happy to put you in touch with SNAP’s manager.
Simply call my office on 791820 or, out of hours, catch me on the banks
of Loch Thom.
