Report to the People
24th December 2007
Remember the Workers
Well,
if you’re reading this, then I think congratulations are in order.
The
presents are obviously wrapped, the fridge must be full and that Christmas night
out with Simon from Human Resources and your particularly adventurous
interpretation of the Lambada is a mercifully dim memory.
So,
before reminding the kids to leave out a carrot for Rudolph and a half bottle
for Santa, it’s high time you rewarded yourself with a cup of tea and the Tele.
With
the exception of these infuriating individuals who have everything bought,
wrapped up and paid for by the September weekend, the run-up to Christmas must
be our busiest time of year.
Because,
as if your festive preparations weren’t enough, your real work (the one which
is paying for all this, remember) invariably steps up a gear too.
Shopworkers,
bar staff, taxi drivers and everyone else who works in the retail, leisure or
hospitality industries know exactly what I mean. And December is a high-pressure month for the emergency
services and other workers on whom the rest of us rely.
It’s
also a busy time for politicians - although I’d hardly call going to carol
services, school concerts and Christmas fetes a hard shift.
So,
as I always say at this time of year, it’s important that we spare a thought
for everyone whose hard work makes our Christmas happen.
And,
if December’s toil has left you deadbeat, just make sure you have a great day
tomorrow - you’ve certainly earned it.
Merry
Christmas.
