Greenock Politicians Get Sneak Preview of T2
- Glasgow Airport's Second Terminal
Local politicians David Cairns and Duncan McNeil had a sneak preview of Glasgow
Airport’s second terminal today when they went behind the scenes to see how
work on the new building is progressing.
Glasgow’s
T2, scheduled to open in May, is being introduced to meet rising demand from no
frills airlines and charter companies, and will see Glasgow become the first
major airport in Scotland to develop two terminals.
The
£12 million project involves the complete renovation of the former St
Andrew’s building, with a new extension incorporating an additional 9 check in
desks, taking T2’s total check-in desks to 25.
The
development also includes four new aircraft parking stands and a new £1.8
million hold baggage screening facility, featuring a state of the art x-ray
system.
The
final stage of the development will see T2 connected directly to the main
terminal building with a covered walkway.
The
new terminal is expected to handle over one million passengers a year.
MP
David Cairns said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to see T2 under
construction. It’s an ambitious project and will make a real difference to the
airport’s ability to grow and invest. With demand for low cost air travel on
the increase, Glasgow Airport is right to plan for the future.”
Duncan
McNeil MSP said: “Glasgow Airport is a real success story, providing valuable
jobs and investment, not just for the Renfrewshire economy, but across the west
of Scotland. It delivers real
travel choice for passengers from places such as Greenock and Inverclyde and,
with more new destinations on offer this summer, this choice looks set to
increase.”
Stephen
Baxter, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, added: “T2 has been designed to
meet the growing demand from the low cost, no frills airlines. We’ve installed
new check-in and baggage handling facilities at T2 to help relieve some of the
pressure on the main terminal, especially during the busy summer months, when we
can expect up to one million passengers a month.”
The
opening of T2 comes at a crucial period of expansion for Glasgow Airport, with
the onset of the busy summer schedule and the launch of new routes to Europe,
Canada, the US and the Gulf region.
Baxter
added: “Glasgow Airport is the natural choice for passengers from Greenock and
Inverclyde, with more holiday destinations than any other airport. This year we
have even more choice than ever, with new direct services to destinations like
Prague, Rome, Philadelphia, Toronto and Dubai.”
Emirates
launches its new service to Dubai on Saturday 10 April. The service will offer
passengers from Glasgow Airport onward connections to over 70 destinations,
including the Far East, Australia and New Zealand.
