"Help Scotland Score a Victory" McNeil Urges Inverclyde
MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, is urging local people to join him in pledging their support for the Euro 2008 bid.

Speaking after signing up to back the joint Scottish / Irish bid through the bid’s official website – www.euro2008bid.com – he said that a successful bid wouldn’t just bring a sparkle to our streets, but pounds to our pockets.

"The success of the World Cup has shown that it is possible for two countries to jointly host a major tournament. And the success of Champions’ League final earlier in the year proved that Scotland is certainly up to the job.

"With the three major Glasgow stadiums due to host games, Inverclyde would be an ideal base for visiting fans. And turning Clyde Square into an Italian Piazza or a Spanish plaza, would give us more than a carnival atmosphere to enjoy. It would be a great benefit to our economy – not just during the tournament, but in the years to come as overseas fans returned to see our breath-taking scenery, enjoy our hospitality, sail from our luxury marina, or play one of our three golf courses.

"If we can send a message that the whole of Scotland – not just the cities – backs this bid, we stand a better chance of winning and reaping the benefits. That is why I am urging everyone in Inverclyde to back the bid and help score a victory for Scotland."

Fans can pledge their support for the Euro 2008 bid by logging on to the bid’s official website – www.euro2008bid.com – and selecting "Support." Anyone without Internet access can call Mr McNeil’s office on 01475 791 820 with their name and address and he will ensure their support is registered.

Other figures who have already pledged their support for the Euro 2008 bid include First Minister, Jack McConnell; Manchester United Manager, Sir Alex Ferguson; Musician, Rod Stewart; Actor, Robert Carlyle; and former international legends, John Greig and Pat Bonner.
