Looks for Answers in Smoking Announcement
Commenting
on the forthcoming announcement on smoking in public places, MSP for Greenock
and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, said:
“That
smoking is a bad, dangerous habit is not in doubt.
But, having taken a huge amount of evidence on this at the Health
Committee, questions about this course of action remain to be answered.
“Is
there evidence that passive smoking in public places is a health risk?
Or is this campaign more about comfort?
“Is
it not more important to help people stop smoking altogether, rather than just
moving them out of sight? Should we
not be concentrating our efforts on sweeping away endemic poor public health,
rather than sweeping it under the carpet?
“Should
we have people smoking in pubs, surrounded by consenting adults, or in their
living rooms, surrounded by their children?
“I
look forward to these questions and others being answered when we come to
scrutinise any forthcoming legislation at the Health Committee.”
