IRH Car Park Charge Imposition: Make Health Board Make its Case
Commenting on today’s news that NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde will impose car parking charges for patients, visitors and staff at Inverclyde Royal Hospital in early 2008, MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, said:

“There might be a problem with commuters in Glasgow abusing hospital car parking facilities and I accept that the Board needs to put a stop to it.  But that abuse doesn’t happen here in Greenock – a fact the Board would have known if it had looked at the situation here.

“NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde may have consulted on their plans in Glasgow, was that before Inverclyde joined the new board?  What chance did local patients’ groups, residents and the wider community have to contribute to this consultation?  Have surveys of IRH car park usage been undertaken?  Has anyone spoken to Fancy Farm residents who will see their roads clogged up with the parked cars of motorists seeking to avoid the charge?

“We still have around eighteen months before these charges are set to be imposed and I will use this time to demand that the Health Board answers these questions and makes its case.  I also expect the Health Minister to examine whether or not this course of action is in fact in keeping with Executive guidelines.”
