Comments on Confirmation of Sanmina Redundancies
Commenting
on today’s announcement which confirmed Sanmina-SCI’s decision to make
redundant 150 employees at its Greenock plant, MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde,
Duncan McNeil, said:
“I
have today met with the enterprise company to discuss what support will be made
available to those affected by the job losses which have been confirmed in this
announcement. I
am reassured to learn that they have already met employees’ representatives
and are working very closely with the training organisations and Job Centre
Plus.
“Based
on the enterprise company’s record, I am confident that they will provide help
of a high standard. That,
however, will be cold comfort to the 150 employees and their families.”
He
continued:
“We must also continue, however, to ask some serious questions about how we are going to reform our economy.
“More
jobs must be attracted into this area. To this end, I have again written
to Enterprise Minister, Jim Wallace, repeating my calls for the necessary steps
– from better transport links to real partnership working between the
Executive and the employment, training and enterprise bodies – to be taken in
areas like Greenock. This is the only route to the upskilling which is
vital if we are to meet the challenge of reducing our over-reliance on a small
number of large employers.”
