MSP Seeks All-Party Support for Petition
Following statements made by the SNPs Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Andrew Murie, regarding the "Save the Rankin" campaign, MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, said:
"I am surprised that the first public comment on this issue by the SNP is from a researcher rather than an MSP. I can only assume it is more to do with his political ambition that the provision of local maternity services.
"As you would expect of a local MSP, I have applied a consistent and hands-on approach to this issue since before April 2000. I have raised the issue in parliamentary debate, made representation to the Health Trust and Health Board, and have had discussions with staff and professionals.
"I will do my damnedest to ensure that the views of my constituents are heard on this issue. This is not a time for party political squabbling. We need to seek common cause on the issue to ensure Health bosses do not make decisions that are detrimental to our local maternity services.
"That is why I launched the petition yesterday and why I have asked West of Scotland MSPs of all parties to support the campaign. I look forward to receiving a more considered and mature response from those MSPs, in order that we can work together on the campaign."
