“All
the Best for the Next 150 Years” – McNeil’s Birthday wish to Tele
Sending 150th birthday
wishes to the Greenock Telegraph, MSP
for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, said:
“I, of course, am a former
employee of the Telegraph. Not,
before anyone else says it, typesetting the first edition in 1857, but
delivering it around Branchton in the 1960s – little did I know then that the
skills I perfected doing battle with furious dogs and lethal garden gates would
stand me in good stead for my future career on the campaign trail.
“It’s a testament to the Tele’s
place as a Greenock and Inverclyde institution that, despite the challenges
posed by new media, it continues to enjoy a wide and dedicated readership.
“As the motion I have
tabled in the Parliament says, we should pay tribute to all the editors,
journalists, photographers, advertising sales staff, administrators and everyone
else – including the paper boys and girls – whose hard work is essential in
bringing us out local news and sport. I
wish the "Tele" many happy returns on it’s birthday and all the very
best for its next 150 years.”
ENDS
Mr McNeil’s motion reads:
