Scottish Parliament to Pay Tribute to Telegraph
The Greenock Telegraph is on the Scottish Parliaments agenda next Wednesday.
MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, has tabled a motion marking local newspaper week, recognising the contribution local papers make to their communities and the valuable services they provide. "The Greenock Telegraph," the motion notes, " is a fine example of [this]."
Mr McNeil expressed his pleasure that the motion has been called for debate on Wednesday 23rd May, saying:
"The Greenock Telegraph is as much a fixture of local life as the Lyle Hill or the Battery Park. The figures show that, despite the challenges posed by television, radio and the Internet, Inverclyde people still turn to the Tele for their night's news.
"It is a window on our community and this gives us a unique opportunity to present all that is positive within the area to a wider audience. It acts as a focal point for community life - whether youre interested in football matches or marital ones.
"Local Newspapers also provide a level of scrutiny for local elected representatives which broadcast and other national media simply cannot provide. This is good for democracy and for the political process and it is therefore important that the Scottish Parliament marks Local Newspaper Week."
