18th February 2003

New Lamps for Old
The people of Greenock and Inverclyde are being offered the chance to save cash and help the environment by switching to brand new energy efficient light bulbs.

The bulbs, which retail at around £7.00, will be handed out free to anyone bringing an old bulb to the energywatch Advice Roadshow, being held on Monday 24th February in the Wellpark Mid Kirk Church Hall.

The Roadshow brings together a range of advisers and experts under one roof, giving those attending direct and easy access to the best advice on cutting fuel bills, specialist benefits and a host of other fuel related issues.

MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, who will also be at the event, urged as many of his constituents as possible to come along, saying:

"I am delighted that powerful industry watchdog, energywatch – with whom I’ve been pleased to work in the past on the issue of utility mis-selling – are holding an event such as this here in Greenock.

"This is a great chance, whether you’re interested in warm deal grants, cutting your fuel bill, or just getting your hands on an energy saving light bulb, to get the facts on fuel and probably save yourself a few pounds in the process."

Attendees at the event include:

Strathclyde and Central Energy Efficiency Advice Centre, who will be offering advice on energy efficiency, fuel poverty and running the free light bulb exchange (which is limited to one per person.)

Age Concern Scotland, who will provide information on specialist benefits and welfare rights for older people.

Inverclyde Council will have a member of the Energy and Safety Team on hand.

Solas, the central heating and insulation organisation which works with Inverclyde Council on the Warm Deal and Free Central Heating scheme, will also be there.

As will representatives of Inverclyde Trading Standards, who can advise on general consumer issues.

energywatch Scotland will also be in attendance to take up any complaints people may wish to raise with regard to power companies.

On the light bulb exchange offer, Mr McNeil said:

"If you’ve thought about switching to energy saving bulbs, but weren’t sure how well they would measure up to a normal bulb, this is your chance to find out for free.

"Simply take your old bulb to the Strathclyde and Central Energy Efficiency Advice Centre stand on Monday and they will give you a brand new energy efficient one in return. What could be simpler?

"Remember, though, that the offer is limited to one per person – so don’t bring down strings of old fairy lights, expecting to walk off with 4 dozen."
