World Youth Volunteers: Only
Two Pairs Still Looking for Accommodation
MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde,
Duncan McNeil, has congratulated the big-hearted people of
Inverclyde who have opened their homes to World Youth Volunteers
from Nigeria and the UK.
The young volunteers, who are taking part in the World Youth Millennium Awards scheme, run by Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO), will be visiting Inverclyde between August and October this year to carry out a range of voluntary work in the community. Following an appeal in the Greenock Telegraph for local families to help accommodate the volunteers during their stay, almost all of the young people have now found places in homes in the community.
Only two pairs of World Youth Volunteers now await a placement.
Mr McNeil told the Telegraph:
"That nearly all of the young volunteers have been found accommodation with local families is a testament to the generosity of the people of Inverclyde."
Jacinta Sweeney, who is coordinating the project, said it would be deeply unfortunate if any of the young people could not attend for want of accommodation. She commented:
"This is a great chance, not only for the young people themselves, but for the cultures of West Central Scotland and West Central Africa to meet and learn more about each other. It would be an opportunity missed if any of these young people, who are so keen to come to Inverclyde, could not do so for want of a place to stay.
"I would therefore say to the people of Inverclyde that, if you, or a friend or family member, has the time and space to put a public spirited young person up for a few weeks, to give it some serious thought.
"It could be a once in a lifetime experience and you wont be out of pocket, as you will be given living expenses for the volunteers upkeep.
"If you can help in any way, call me
on (01475) 630 114 or 07734 084 138. You can also email me at:
