Energy Policy
Commenting on a Liberal Democrat MP’s claim that his party in Holyrood would block
any attempt to build a new nuclear power station in Scotland, MSP for Greenock
and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil said:
“I’m
not sure how kindly Jim Wallace will take to receiving orders from one of his
backbench MPs down in Westminster, but I’m fairly relaxed about this.
“We
need, as the report says, a proper audit of the country's energy resources. We
also need to consider how we’re going to meet our energy needs and
environmental targets in the coming decades.
“Do
we, for example, rely on gas supplies from countries like Russia?
Or do we put more emphasis on tackling global warming, by using more
carbon-free options such as nuclear power? What
role can renewable energy sources play?
“These
are difficult judgements and I am sure that, when it comes to it, both the
Westminster and the Holyrood Parliaments will take the decisions with which they
are charged in the best interests of nothing other than the country.”
