Bus Bosses Must Clamp Down on Law Breakers – McNeil
MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, is keeping up the pressure on bus companies who turn a blind eye to their drivers and passengers flouting the law by lighting up while travelling.

He has written to all local bus operators reminding them of the law and of the consequences of not enforcing their smoking policy.

"The travelling public, particularly the elderly and young, should not be forced to endure the tobacco fumes of a selfish minority," he told the Telegraph today.

"The law is very clear. It is illegal, in almost all circumstances, for drivers to smoke when carrying passengers and for passengers to smoke where no smoking signs are displayed.

"Bus companies who turn a blind eye to their drivers or passengers flouting these laws risk prosecution and losing their licence. They also risk alienating their considerate customers, who are happy to follow the rules, and losing the business of those who are sick of breathing polluted air.

"It is up to bus operators to ensure – like any other employer – that their employees comply with regulations and respond to customer complaints.

"That is why I have written to all the operating companies, reminding them of the law and asking how they enforce their smoking policies. I hope this will help passengers and the police recognise the good operators and encourage the rest to clean up their act."
