Stopping Crime in Greenock
Calls to Crimestoppers Scotland from
the Greenock area have doubled, new figures show.
The free 0800 555 111
hotline, which helps members of the public fight crime in their local area, has
experienced a huge surge in calls since becoming a 24 hours a day, seven days a
week operation in March.
Welcoming the figures, MP for
Greenock and Inverclyde, David Cairns, said:
“Constituents often come to
my surgery and tell me about crime in their area, but they are sometimes
reluctant to report it to the local police.
So Crimestoppers’ 24 hour helpline is ideal for them.
You can report crime anonymously at any time of the day or night and be
assured that your information will be passed on to the local police within a
matter of minutes.
“Crimestoppers has
certainly proved its worth in Inverclyde. With
their help, local police have solved an attempted murder, caught several drug
dealers and tracked down an unlicensed driver.
If you see something suspicious near where you live, don’t hesitate to
call. Your information may be just
what the police need to solve a crime.”
His Scottish Parliament
colleague, Duncan McNeil MSP, echoed this, adding:
“Crimestoppers helps to
empower the community and helps to harness public support in the fight against
crime.
“It lets people who might
have vital information about a crime come forward without fear of reprisals. Crimestoppers
guarantees complete anonymity to callers, whatever the case and, if information
given to Crimestoppers results in the arrest and charge of a suspect, the caller
may be entitled to a cash reward.”
Stewart McCulloch, Chairman
of Crimestoppers Scotland, confirmed that actionable calls for Scotland as a
whole are up by 62%. In the
Greenock area alone, the number already has risen from 59 last year to 113 since
Crimestoppers moved to its new call centre.
The ‘HEAR for you 24/7’
campaign is the brainchild of Inverclyde marketing consultancy, Crave Design.
