Christmas Card Recycling
MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, is backing the Woodland Trust, WH Smith and Tesco’s 2005 Christmas Card Recycling Scheme – and is urging his constituents to do the same.

The scheme lets individuals recycle their old Christmas cards by leaving them in the special recycling bins which are in all WH Smith High Street stores and all Tesco stores across Scotland.

Last year, the Tesco and WH Smith stores in Greenock alone recycled over 2 tonnes of cards.

Mr McNeil, who will be recycling his cards at his local Tesco store in Dalrymple Street, says taking advantage of the scheme could reduce waste in landfill sites.

“In Scotland, over 100 million cards will have been sent this Christmas and the majority will end up in the bin,” he said today.  “By simply taking your old cards to the local recycling facilities provided by the Woodland Trust, we could dramatically reduce waste in our landfill sites.”

“Last year, in Greenock alone, we recycled over 2 tonnes of cards.  The 2005 campaign aims to go even further and I’m sure that the people of Greenock and Inverclyde will be happy to play our part in achieving this goal and making a difference to our environment.”

Funds raised from the scheme will support the Woodland Trust and its “Tree for All” campaign.  This aims to plant 2 million trees in Scotland over the next five years.  In the six years the Woodland Trust has been involved in the Christmas Card Recycling Scheme, over 3,800 tonnes have been recycled –  contributing to the creation and care of 28 woods.

The scheme will run from 5th January until 1st February 2004.  For more info visit www.woodland-trust.org.uk/recycling
